Bouncers, Rockers & Swings

A baby bouncer has a soft fabric seat sewn onto a frame that responds to your baby’s kicking motion by bouncing up and down. It works well as a way to keep your small one entertained and soothed when they are not in your arms.

Many babies love movement, particularly bouncing, but it can be impossible to get anything done if you have to hold, bounce, and rock your little loved one every hour of the day. So, if your baby is fussing in their baby play yard and you’re in the middle of chores or helping your other kids, a bouncy seat can provide a comforting, fun, and responsive option while freeing up your hands. Some models also come with sensory toys for babies to look at and hold.

While a baby bouncer is designed to respond to the baby’s movements, an infant swing is mechanized to swing on its own. The motion is designed to help calm your baby. A baby swing will require batteries and does take up a sizeable amount of space because the seat hangs from a frame—similar to swings for children or adults.

A baby rocker, by contrast, is a smaller often non-mechanized option that can provide a calming motion. Like an adult rocker, a rocker for infants moves forward and backward rhythmically. You will need to get it rocking because it is not responsive to infant motions the way the bouncy chair is. Some rockers also use battery power to offer vibration settings that can help to soothe your baby.

All of these are great options to add to your baby’s nursery. The choice often comes down to a question of space or effectiveness for your particular child. Keep in mind that children should never be left unsupervised in any of these devices.
